I am a Staff Midwife at the San Antonio Birth Center where we work with expectant families through the prenatal journey, labor and birth experience, newborn transition and postpartum adjustment period, guiding and encouraging as parents find their own path and power. Offering a combined 30+ years of experience in birth, and wisdom from hundreds of unique birth experiences, the staff midwives contribute to your experience while balancing the art of midwifery with medical knowledge, refined skill and unwavering faith. We see our role as one that supports you to listen to your own inner wisdom and encourage you in trusting the process that is pregnancy and birth.
I came to midwifery through a unique path. Most women become midwives after experiencing birth, but I first experience a home birth long before the possibility of motherhood. Because of my early exposure to midwife attended birth (at the age of 12), I cannot remember a time when I did not trust in the process of birth. Skilled in breech birth and having assisted several sets of home birthed twins into the world, I bring experience in the art of midwifery that reaches back to traditional midwifery, before the era of modern midwifery. Though my formal education in midwifery began almost 18 years ago, I feel I will always be a student of life and enjoy soaking in new knowledge, looking forward to the lifelong process of refining the art of midwifery.
I consider myself an expert in normal birth, a guardian of what is normal, watchful - yet allowing your process to unfold without expectation. Though I have served a vast spectrum of clientele, I offer a few specialty areas of expertise that include:
- Working with women who are preparing to birth for the first time
- Working with women planning a VBAC
- Working with siblings; helping to prepare them for the new addition to the home, as well as preparing them for being present at the birth (if parents desire)
- Working with teen moms
- Waterbirth
- Breech and multiple pregnancies
- Offering herbal, homeopathic, supplementation and nutritional advice
As a preceptor I believe that midwifery is an art that is passed through the generations by women to women. Learning to incorporate the knowledge, skill and faith that are necessary to be a competent midwife requires much more than academic learning. It is a privilege to work with student midwives.
I am also a Birthing From Within Mentor and mentor deep, meaningful and fun childbirth classes based on the book Birthing From Within by Pam England. My web site if full of information about these unique classes.
It would be an honor to assist you in your birth experience. I feel that no process quite compares to being present with families as they experience the journey of bring forward new life. Please visit me at www.AlisaVoss.com to learn more about the services I offer.
